Gays, but no homosexuals

Die Amis, mal wieder:
In a recent poll about "Don't Ask Don't Tell," 79% of Democrats said they were in favor of letting gays and lesbians serve openly in the armed forces while only 43% were in favor of letting homosexuals serve openly. Huh?
